We used a cyan colour gel as a side light accent here to add some visual interest to this musician portrait. Don’t hesitate to bring as many props as you’d like to mix things up ! Although we typically suggest to plan/previsualize your photoshoot, it is also essential to plan for the unexpected and spontaneous ideas that come up while shooting.

Kick up your headshot a notch and use an environmental background! Let us know if you have something specific in mind, or have us pick the best option based on your wardrobe.
For this look we chose to shoot just outside the building in the loading dock. Since our subject was wearing a shirt that showed her lighter complexion, we felt the subtle contrast was just enough to make the headshot lively.

/ / / / / The right shirt

Tyler came into the studio to get some acting headshots done, and brought with him a variety of clothing options. This particular shirt was an item he purchased not exactly for the shoot, but with the shoot in mind. It even had the tag still on it!

Not only did he go home that day with a great photo, but a great shirt as well! We recommend taking your time to plan the little for your photoshoot, such as a getting a fresh haircut, buying a new pair of glasses, or simply giving your wardrobe an update.

/ / / / / to crop or not to crop

One of the most common things we’ve noticed over the years of shooting is that people tend to like things on others they don’t necessarily immediately like on themselves. An example of this is when it comes to the cropping of the photos.

We often respond well to portraits of others that have a subtly tight crop (since the impression is more impactful). Due to this, we sometimes apply the same cropping technique to our headshots, yet we found it’s common for clients to react with a “don’t cut my head off!”

We decided the best way to alleviate the issue was to provide the files with a tighter and looser crop. And ideally, with their own timing, they will slowly get used to the sight of their own faces close up!

The other week, we had the opportunity to stray from our day to day Linkedin portrait and model portrait, to a slightly different breed—the personal portrait.

With some references images in hand, send them over via email and you can customize your photoshoot with us. Request a specific size, pose, or go all out and come with a particular lighting set up in mind ! For this recent shoot, we customized the colour grading to replicate a vintage effect from a reference our client had sent as inspiration.

Here’s a great headshot that we shot back when the weather was more pleasant. You might be wondering why I am teasing you with a headshot shot in a different season, however trust me that I have something more relevant to provide you with than that.

This little spot is only 5 steps away from the studio, which means even on a shivery cold day, this warm brick wall is still an option for a couple shots. The other day when we were shooting against it, our client was talking to us about how it’s all in your head about whether your brain decides if it’s cold or not. I guarantee his great attitude came across in the portrait !

Headshots can be a bit stressful, that’s why changing it up to a sitting posture can make all the difference ! Ease your body weight and let the chair soak up all your nerves. We have a variety of things to sit on including chairs with and without backs. In this shot we used our chair with a back so that she could rest her hands nicely creating a personable accent.
