Kick up your headshot a notch and use an environmental background! Let us know if you have something specific in mind, or have us pick the best option based on your wardrobe.
For this look we chose to shoot just outside the building in the loading dock. Since our subject was wearing a shirt that showed her lighter complexion, we felt the subtle contrast was just enough to make the headshot lively.

However we do guarantee you will receive expert advice on how to get the image you want, whether it be shooting in a decorative studio, hiring a photo editor to enhance the image with special effects, or simply using another photographer who is more specialized in your taste of portraiture.

Headshots and Portrait at our Downtown Studio:

/ / / / / Brick for a classic touch

Here’s a great headshot that we shot back when the weather was more pleasant. You might be wondering why I am teasing you with a headshot shot in a different season, however trust me that I have something more relevant to provide you with than that.

This little spot is only 5 steps away from the studio, which means even on a shivery cold day, this warm brick wall is still an option for a couple shots. The other day when we were shooting against it, our client was talking to us about how it’s all in your head about whether your brain decides if it’s cold or not. I guarantee his great attitude came across in the portrait !

In one sense you may think that it’s easier to nail the shot when you don’t have to worry about using your body. The interesting thing that we’ve concluded after many years of shooting headshots, is the scariest thing in this world is the sight of our own face. That is precisely the reason why our horizontal headshot style is more popular than our vertical. Although it’s all about context in the end, since when it comes to acting headshots, the norm is a vertical / portrait orientation.

In this example we coached her expression to be soft in the lips, and slightly tense in the eyes. It just so happens to be that that particular balance is just right when it comes to headshots. Actors can even get away with pushing their squint even more than you would in a regular portrait. Eyes are the first place anyone looks when they see the photo, so make sure yours are engaged and personable!

Friendly and Professional Portraits, and Why you Shouldn’t Be Too Friendly:

/ / / / / How Warm is Too Warm

We have several choices of beige to select from, and the reason is not due to some trend running in course in the photography world. As I like to say, portraiture is a quite like a science. In previous blog posts I’ve talked about how warm toned clothing will look good on all skin types, which means the same logic proves true for backgrounds—right??

So the question becomes, if beige is so warm and lovely, why don’t you see us using more? The reason is though business portraits should be friendly (and beige does encompass that quality) it also goes above and beyond in the realm of positive emotions, almost radiating compassion. To put it simple it’s a rather strong psychological reaction, which instantly makes the photo have more humanity. Professionally speaking, we suggest using our lightest beige for careers that involve more social interaction like a consultant or caretaker.

Modelling Portrait with Fashion Styling:

/ / / / / Editorial styled photoshoots:

Although we frequently shoot classic LinkedIn headshots, we love being able to unleash our creativity during sessions that are flexible to more stylized options when it comes to wardrobe, background, and photoshoot style.

In this session, we used a super soft lighting setup, to create an almost angelic dewy feeling that is appealing to the commercial industry. For beginner model portfolios, the posing doesn’t need to be over the top, a simple headshot composition with the right type of styling, right choice of lens, and the right angle, you’ll encompass a simplicity that’s appealing to everyone.

Leave the details to us, and see how easy it is to get great headshots to build your acting or modeling book!

Here’s an example of a shot where we styled the background with neutral fabric to add visual interest Kamryn’s portrait. She had her makeup and hair professionally done for this shoot, can you tell? This time our artist did a soft smoky shadow on her to accentuate her eyes and kept the lips natural to focus the attention even more on her eyes. Please enquire about booking an artist several weeks in advance.
