Although we do shoot a lot of corporate headshots for LinkedIn (probably due to our proximity to the financial district), there are the times where we feel like we hit a niche season. The theme of the niche this time? Birthday portraits!

Although in general it’s not that odd of a request to have people interested in capturing themselves as they are, at this point in life, with out using the selfie mode on their cellphone.

Winter is here ! And thankfully Toronto doesn’t trade the sun for the cold, which helps us tremendously when you’re looking to get a light feel-good portrait.

We used our rustic window background to incorporate some natural light in the portrait. In addition to the sun as our main light source, we also used a studio light to fill in the shadows and ensure that the subjects face looks flattering.

These two adorable sisters had their moms planned out the dresses and background based on pointers boards they had collected of inspiration.

After sending us the reference images, it was easy to tell the direction they wanted to take the photoshoot in. When it comes to your big moment, we encourage you to keep communicating with us along the way. In this case, we learned that the mom wanted more of a fashion/magazine editorial feeling to the shoot. Once we found that out, we changed the direction of the posing and altered the lighting to suit her vision. How do you guys like the result? Rather angelic no?
