/ / / / / how to wear your long hair

The most common question we get is what to wear, but little do we think that our hair is one of the more important elements to a good photo beside our facial expression.

Hair is emotional and evokes an expression entirely on its own. If the smile in your headshot is warm, natural, and friendly, you should aim for the hair to be the same. Therefore it’s usually not a good idea to have it tied back but rather let it lay naturally.

However, as with anything, there are always exceptions to the rule. In this exceptional example, our client had nicely textured layers that evoke the same organic emotion as would if it were hair down. For this reason, the hair being up becomes a viable option for a professional and clean real estate headshot.

Daniel has many years of experience working as a realtor for Remax. After a decade of using a photo taken from a friend of a friend, and with big ideas for a billboard advertisement on the horizon, an updated headshot was in order.

Of course I do believe in general it’s better to have a photo than to not have a photo, however with each yearcoughcellphonecough, that passes, the expectation for higher quality images increases. It’s not to say we are steadily desiring to see more of ourselves in crisp resolution, just that technology has a funny way of creeping upwards whether we like it or not.

I’ll be the first to openly indulge in my visual geekiness and admit I’ve analyzed the usage of ears in portraits. At the end of the day, a photo is just a bunch of graphics put together. If you’ve looked hard enough, you would have noticed that we cover the ears in 95% of shots, simply because its rather complicated of a shape (relative to other facial shapes such as the nose or lips).

However, despite it’s complication, the addition of the medium sized pearl stud adds a simplicity to the graphics that somehow like magic, pieces the whole thing together just enough. Who would have thought an earring could save the day?

Maria is a new realtor from Remax, and needed some photos to launch her new business endeavour. She wanted to get the ball rolling right away, so shew as prompt in selecting her favourites on the day of, and purchasing a single photo with Priority Editing. Doing this allowed her maximum flexibility in getting 1 final edited image less than 24 hours of her shoot!

Gurinder's husband is a realtor and she wanted to try out the industry for herself. He offered to help get her set up in his company. First things first was she needed professional headshots in a tailored suit. We chose to shoot on our soft white background which compliments everyone's complexion. Gurinder also had makeup and hair services added to her headshot. However upon looking at the photos half way throughout the shoot on the big monitor, as a personal preference she thought her hair had too much volume compared to how she wears it normally. Instead of interrupting the flow of the photoshoot in order to fix her hair, we simply adjusted the shape later in photoshop.

Dolly is a real estate agent who needed to update her headshot for her promotional goods and business cards. Her current material had an outdated photo on them, and looked too much like a snapshot. We suggested getting a white background since it is the easiest way to naturally clip an image when it's being used to design marketing materials.

Harminder needed a high resolution updated headshot to be used for his online marketing, printed signage, and advertisement on bus shelters. He wanted to have his portrait taken outdoors as well as some simple studio shots against a white backdrop. Despite it being quite a windy and chilly day, Harminder toughed it out and nailed a couple of poses.

When booking a more elaborative session that requires shooting indoors and outdoors, we suggest booking the Exclusive Portrait Package which allots up to 2 hours of shooting time. The time is takes to change, move locations, and troubleshoot weather conditions, surprisingly adds up quickly, and we'd never want rush anyone through the photoshoot process. If you ever have any questions about which package is right for you, please don't hesitate to call or email us with your queries.

Garth needed to update his business headshot for his realty page, and came to us in search of getting a photo that was both modern and classic. Keeping in mind that he was in the middle of rebranding his company, we asked him questions to help us get an idea of how to style the shoot best to suit his vision. We finally settled on a mature charcoal grey background, with a contrasting no-tie open collared shirt look which portrayed his trustworthy yet down to earth persona. All the best with the rebranding Garth!
