Some people’s approach to their portrait is very practical. The standing portrait gives you the flexibility to take it as it is, breathable with less emphasis on the face, or crop later as an option. Crop it your self or have us do it for you, either way you are bound to get some variation by choosing this style of headshot.

Here’s a recent shoot we did whereby the client liked both vertical and horizontal portrait styles. This can be done by manually by literally making the camera shoot in both vertical and horizontal orientation, or it can be achieved by cropping in photoshop later on.

The horizontal crop uses the white space (or in this case—the grey space) to frame the subject comfortably. The effect of a horizontal portrait is contemporary and considerate, it emits a “breathable” feeling, as opposed to the heaviness from the tighter cropped vertical shot.

The vertical shot’s benefit is it is simply more impactful, and since there’s less information in the frame, your expression is more noticeable and a natural smile becomes invaluable.

This is a great example of the rule I often mention, but can never be heard enough as the number one tip for what to wear for Linkedin headshots: in order to have a stunning portrait, consider using a light, medium, and dark tone in your photo. Count the background as part of your wardrobe, as what clothing you wear against what background will also matter.

To break it down even simpler, for your wardrobe stick to two tones, and let the background speak as the third. So if your jacket is dark navy and your shirt is bright white, finish it off with a medium grey background!

We often see white outfits on white backgrounds, and black outfits on black backgrounds, but we must say a grey outfit on a grey background is the least common of the bunch. Though it’s not to say that it can’t be as effective since the same graphic principles apply. The popularity of black and white clothing is more likely due the general fact that humans prefer contrast.

Personally we think this grey on grey look works perfectly for this particular client’s complexion due to her dark hair colour and pale skin tone. All three shades—light medium, and dark, are present making for a balanced image.

This young lady we shot the other day was applying to Ryerson for fashion design, and needed some application photos of her portfolio pieces. She booked our Corporate/Business Package, but after specifying her needs over the phone, we were still able to book her in for 40 mins session since she needed only 3 photos.

This is a dress she designed for the evening wear requirement. We followed the specifications given to us from the school. If you have application photos of any sort (other than passport and government applications) feel free to send us the specifications to ensure a smooth process.

Though it might be your tendency to lean towards a light background (and we see it especially more so in women) our thunder grey could be the background of your dreams!  Plus we think a bright red lip makes a smashing accent against this shade!

Don’t be afraid to add some some extra sparkle to your professional Linkedin photo. Minimalistic jewellery that is not distracting from your face, work best for headshots. Have fun and mix things up as you never know how things are going to pickup on camera with all the lights and action!
