/ / / / / Cropping headshots for a more dynamic effect

I’m sure you’ve all seen that style of headshot where the photographer has graciously chosen to slice the top of their subject’s head cut for dramatic effect—but in this post, we are going to dissect another bizarre cutting/cropping technique that we sometimes use to add life to the shot without having our clients put in much effort at all.

Although the eyes and face are with out a doubt the most expressive part of your headshots, the reason we would want to include a portion of the body is to add more depth to the subject’s personality. The hand on the hips activates the shoulder and creates body language that would only ever appear naturally in real life for a few moments (perhaps while waiting in line or listening to a friend ramble on about their day). Thus when we see this pose initially, much like a symbol, our brains automatically register the subtle shoulder action as a candid moment that just happened to get captured on camera.

This technique comes in handy if you’re one of those totally normal people who have no idea what to do with their hands in the shot !

In this photoshoot with Clara, we started off nice and easy by shooting her business headshot against a grey background. Since she booked the Professional Package, she had enough time to switch the background and her wardrobe and go casual for her second look.

We encouraged the use of a black background, which is our go to option when it comes to creating a moody and artistic portrait. Since the images were going to be used on social media, we threw the rules out the window and even suggested having a seat on the floor with out shoes to make her look and feel comfortable.

Nick had been putting off getting his headshot taken for a few months. Though he had worked so hard to avoid it, he could finally no longer run from the camera. Recently he had won an award and was being honoured for it. With a request for a professional high quality headshot on his radar, he decided to contact us for a quick in-and-out Minimal Package session.

One strategy he took was booking the quickest package, and purchasing the rights to all the unedited images. That way he maximized the amount of content he got from the session, allowing him to have photos to use for a variety of purposes, all the while keeping the most painful photoshoot part short and sweet.

Spice up your photoshoot with the use of props! We have no limitations on what you can bring to add some liveliness to your portrait. Even for business portraits, we often have had people bringing in something related to their profession to add a personable touch such as their notebook, favourite mug, or pair of sunglasses. Here’s a casual portrait that was from a company who conceptually depicted what their staff do on their days off from work.

Julian is a young energetic artist with a strong vision for what he wants. He booked a Minimal Package and came equipped with references of lighting style and mood. We always encourage those with a specific idea in mind to take the reigns of the photoshoot. As we describe it—we are client based photographers who work with you to achieve your ideal image. From start to finish, how you use your shooting time is up to you. We even encourage you to choose your own photos (but are of course welcome to those that need help or advice).

Michael is a local DJ who is working on putting his first EP together. He needed a photo in a square format to be used for his album cover. We happened to have our set painted a moody deep blue which was leftover from a previous session. His music incorporates electronic and jazz together, so we were lucky it happened to be the perfect shade of blue to represent his music style. Looking forward to hearing your tracks once everything is all finished!
