How to Dress Friendly for Corporate & Business Headshots:

Today’s answering of “What to wear for your business portrait” entails an explanation of my favourite colour: blue ! Usually I explain this as an option for men to wear to make their corporate suits more approachable, but now I’m going to explain the strength for women.

Since childhood we have been trained to think of pastel blue as a boys colour, and because of this it’s always going to read more masculine (even though a boy isn’t really the epitome of masculinity). To soften the blue, I recommend keeping an eye out for silkier, more shimmery fabrics if you’re going to use this as a blouse colour. Essentially fabric that will pick up the shine of the studio lights will add some gentle, feminine highlights.

The most commonly asked question male or female, is what do I wear to my business headshot? That question can be answered in many ways, but the aspect I’m going to write about today or more so, how much should I wear? In other words, how far down do you dress—do you come in sweatpants on the bottom and suit and tie at the top, or should you wear the full suits and show a little more body in the shots? There really is no rule as to how much is too much when it comes to being a loose shot or tighter headshot, it’s all up to personal taste.

In this business headshot session, our client preferred the breathable feeling of a 3/4 length portrait. Since we knew that was his preference, we tailored the session to include mostly 3/4 length portraits to choose from as opposed to a classic shoulders up variation.

For extra comfort in the studio environment, we like people to have something to lean on whether its a wall, a chair, or a fake studio posing table! This table is actually quite small and though you can’t even tell, has been extended in the editing process to appear like a normal table.

Everyone has a different comfort level on camera, and for some having your arms rest against something that feels like you’re free from the perils of gravity—simply works! Here, Bo was able to show off his accessories intentionally, to add a touch of personalization to his business headshot.

Here’s a great example of a recent headshot session where we shot against our simple white background, but ended up with some great personality shots in the studio. Due to this particular lighting set up, the background appears off white. By having the subject stand further away from the wall, and blocking the light from leaking onto the background, you can create a gentler shot against white.

In this shot we added a yellow colour cast in post production for the emotional content to evoke trust and positivity.

Mandy was running for the election and wanted some clean and classy headshots for her promotional material. We recommend using a horizontal format of headshot so you have flexibility to extend the background to overlay text for posters and marketing material. Mandy booked the Deluxe package and brought a variety of outfit changes ranging from corporate to more casual to make the most of her time.

Marie is a local artist who wanted something unique and visually interesting for her profile picture. She had such killer style we thought it was a great choice to show her in a 3/4 format so we could get her unique rings in the shot as an accent, all the while capturing her graphic silhouette.

What we love about this pose is it shows the hands clearly (which believe it or not—psychologically comes off as trustworthy). Moreover it subtly focuses the attention on her face while still feeling natural. In a portrait, you want to make sure the attention is on the subjects face first (whether the client likes it or not). It is a fact that humans love looking at other peoples faces, and we always keep this in mind during our portrait sessions.

When it comes to your Linkedin headshot, it’s not always necessary to go with a suit jacket and tie. Here’s an example of a headshot for a tech company, demonstrating how even wearing just a shirt is still presentable. I would say that if you were to go for this look, there are still some things you have to consider when selecting. Opt for shirts that have subtle visual details such as the button and collar design, and even the weave of the shirt. In this case, a gentle polka dot pattern makes for a better choice than a plain button up, as it adds a bit of interest without being distracting.

In this day and age, it may seem as if black and white headshots are a thing of the past, however we believe you should never write off that option completely! The reason being is a monochromatic photo will evoke emotions that a coloured photo never can reach. Our advice is when building your portfolio, it’s definitely a good idea to have one or two shots be in black and white to make variety of diverse looks in your book.
