“Blue”—there’s so much I can say about “Blue.” I can start by freaking and geeking out at the fact that men have been brainwashed as children to wear it and therefore love all shades of blue including it’s baby shade (despite it feeling gender neutral in the mainstream).

I can continue by adding that from a psychological and therefore scientific perspective, “Blue” will always read as the most friendly colour in the rainbow. Designers use this to their advantage to appear more humanistic by using “Blue” *cough* facebook *cough* to make good first impressions.

Lastly may I introduce to you the weird fact of the day, which is that “Blue” happened to be the very last colour to be named. Such an instinctively common colour be named last? Yes! It turns out the only things that are blue in nature were the sky and the ocean, therefore there was no urge to put a name on it.

It may sound strange, but believe me when I say showing your ear in a business portrait is a lot trickier than it seems! For whatever the reason, we associate ears with youth. My theory is that since kids have such healthy hair, it often gets in the way and they have to put it back out of habit and practicality. Sooner or later they grow up with a nagging society telling them to loosen up and “let their hair down.”

In our years of shooting, we have however seen one exception across the boards, which is that ears pair well with fresh asymmetrical bobs. Due to the weight of the haircut already being unbalanced, the ear accentuates this silhouette and makes it more comfortable to look at, acting as a frame to the face.

We love how easily a plain white background can be spruced up with a touch of colour harmony. A great tip when selecting what tie to wear, is to choose a colour that’s similar to your shirt. That way no matter what your expression, there’s at least one thing that’s pulled together right in every shot!

Colour wise we recommend to stick to blues and even shades of grey, and when going for more adventurous colours, a warmer shade usually complements everyone well due to the naturally occurring warmth in skin.

Cari was getting featured by a corporate magazine and needed to submit a headshot to the publishers. She had had her business headshot taken prior to them asking, however the photographer who shot her before didn’t capture her in the right spirit that would suit a magazine cover. As we always say, photographers are not alike, and despite the fact that her previous photo had been taken by a professional and was good enough for Linkedin, when it came to retouching and image quality, it did not meet the requirements necessary for it to be blown up on a 8.5 x 11 format.
