We love how easily a plain white background can be spruced up with a touch of colour harmony. A great tip when selecting what tie to wear, is to choose a colour that’s similar to your shirt. That way no matter what your expression, there’s at least one thing that’s pulled together right in every shot!

Colour wise we recommend to stick to blues and even shades of grey, and when going for more adventurous colours, a warmer shade usually complements everyone well due to the naturally occurring warmth in skin.

Pop out against our unseemingly popular background option—black! It may sound a bit intimidating at first, as we’ve all been raised seeing the sometimes cheeky corporate shots on that strikingly classic bright white background.

Trust us when we say for men and women alike, the black, or “charcoal” as we sometimes call it, will bring out your best features in a way white never could. Essentially this is done by colour distribution, whatever colour is next to you, will ever so subtly cast a shadow/hue onto your body. What that means for a solid black is more definition, and more bone structure.

Alison booked our Standard Package and wanted to get a couple options of a simple and classic headshot she could use professionally wherever she pleased. Because the Standard Package gives you two outfit changes, diplomatically she prepared one light, and one dark outfit. Since the package came with 3 photos, she could pick between some variation that we made in our 40 minute session. Book a Standard or Complete Package and get the luxury of changing outfits, and see the difference a simple top swap can make in the overall first impression of your headshot.

Cari was getting featured by a corporate magazine and needed to submit a headshot to the publishers. She had had her business headshot taken prior to them asking, however the photographer who shot her before didn’t capture her in the right spirit that would suit a magazine cover. As we always say, photographers are not alike, and despite the fact that her previous photo had been taken by a professional and was good enough for Linkedin, when it came to retouching and image quality, it did not meet the requirements necessary for it to be blown up on a 8.5 x 11 format. All the best with the issue Cari!

We love the accessories Lana wore for her corporate portrait the other week. Since her haircut was super minimalist, she could afford to add the extra visual weight with her trio of necklaces, and a touch of sparkle in her earrings. This is also a good example of a secret styling tip we often give as advice, focus on representing a trio of shades: light, medium, and dark!

When choosing a suit colour, besides the fact that you cant go wrong with black, blue would be the next best option if you’re looking to add a professional bit of personality to your headshot. The reason being, is that blue happens to be psychologically proven as the friendliest colour! Jordan got the memo, and did a matchy matchy combo for his headshot with a blue tie and suit in the same shade and hue.

Stefana looks angelic here in this professional business headshot with a twist of organic light. Thankfully Toronto has sunny winters, which aides as a light source giving interest to her side silhouette and almost lighting her from behind. Her light jacket works well to blend in softly with the rest of the background, leaving her face to pop into focus ever so gently.

I’ll be the first to openly indulge in my visual geekiness and admit I’ve analyzed the usage of ears in portraits. At the end of the day, a photo is just a bunch of graphics put together. If you’ve looked hard enough, you would have noticed that we cover the ears in 95% of shots, simply because its rather complicated of a shape (relative to other facial shapes such as the nose or lips).

However, despite it’s complication, the addition of the medium sized pearl stud adds a simplicity to the graphics that somehow like magic, pieces the whole thing together just enough. Who would have thought an earring could save the day?
