Over the years we’ve noticed that people tend to be reserved in photos when it comes to smiling with your teeth. We often get people asking if it’s “ok” to smile with a closed mouth or not. The truth is brutal logic—it totally depends. The way you naturally smile is the way you need to smile for the photo (I myself am a proud closed out smiler). It’s not to say we aren’t as happy as the big grinners, but simply it’s what works with the anatomy of our face. This is the reason why you can have someone smiling with their teeth but have it look awkward and vice versa. In lament words, go with what you know and just be yourself!

Damian is starting his own boxing club and wanted a strong image that he could use for the posters and marketing content. He came up with the concept of an action shot while wearing his suit to make for a more emotionally charged photo, aiming at their demographic of the corporate 9-5ers. He put on a great performance making the coolest expressions and we love how the final result turned out! We are wishing you the best of luck with everything Damian!

When image making, since we’re primarily dealing with digital technology, you want to always think about how to maximize the humanity of the portrait. One way we can achieve that is by considering the body’s psychology. Hands symbolize trust, and it’s to your benefit, (even during that client meeting) to show them off! Studies show that people who talk with their hands come across as more convincing and trustworthy. What do you guys think about this twist on our classic business portrait?

Seasonally we notice a big shift in the background colours people select. These days we’ve been having people pick a lot of darker colours. Our reasoning? We’re all so aware of the fact it’s still in winter at this point, and psychologically it’s making our mood more sensitive to bright colours. Despite this very natural urge, don’t forget to still incorporate a bit of warmth in your photo, either by smiling your way through the season or wearing some purple or red in your outfit to balance out the mood. Here’s a great example of how to achieve just that while still remaining very cool and collected in your business portrait.

Tips on how to wear your hair for your headshot:

/ / / / / to pony or not to pony?

This may be a weird thing to bring to light, but once you do you won’t be able to unsee it. We’ve noticed that in almost every corporate female portrait, the woman’s hair is worn down. Sarah on the other hand, with her beautiful wavy hair and mini fringe, showed us how to pull off the business pony. To be honest, we think she is rocking it and couldn’t imagine a stronger way she could present herself. With just the right touch of accessories, the look beams an energetic, smart and savvy vibe.

The important thing to remember is although there are certain rules of thumb, there are always ways you can break the standard. Our advice? The ones who go against the grain tend to make stronger portraits.

In a recent post, I described the magic we can make with a little something called “colour grading”. If any of you use instagram, you may have noticed this function to add colour to the shadows and highlights of your image. Here, we wanted to add to Redstone Agency’s corporate branding by adding none other than the colour—red! Scroll down and our recent posts and see if you can you feel how different the impression is!
